ARCTUROS for the first time in Greece carried out an evaluation
of the demographic situation of the two large carnivores present
today in the hellenic peninsula, the brown bear (Ursus arctos)
and the wolf (Canis lupus). These LIFE-NATURE funded programmes
provided information about the population status, their distribution
and their ecology at a national level. At the same time it
conducted studies on the possible presence of the Eurasian
Lynx (Lynx lynx), in transborder areas of the South Balkans.
The information that was collected was used for the submission
of guidelines in various stakeholders and institutions involved
in the conservation of large carnivores in Greece. The above
proposals resulted in the formulation of the National Action
Plan for the Brown bear whilst it contributed towards the
formulation of the Pan-European Action Plan for large carnivores.
Today ARCTUROS still continues to develop actions for the
conservation of wildlife in the wider region of the Balkan
Peninsula.
