Environmental education is crucial for the development of
environmental conciousness. With the belief that children
are tomorrow's citizens, ARCTUROS is constantly planning and
creating programs of environmental education addressed to
students of both primary and secondary education. Our main
objective is the awareness of children through educational
activities, but also the education of adults in subjects that
concern the protection of species, of wild fauna and of biotopes.
ARCTUROS also aims to assist teachers who wish to conduct
activities relative to the environment, through concrete proposals
and supervisory material.
Additionally, ARCTUROS carries out side projects in the direction
of Environmental Education, with the intention to utilize
the conclusions of field research, to conserve protected species
and to manage regions of major ecological significance: ARCTUROS
organises meetings for the teachers of the regions in which
programs of environmental education take place, participates
in pedagogic conferences whilst trained staff or volunteers
of ARCTUROS visit schools and educational institutions in
order to raise environmental awareness to students and teachers.
The following kits have been produced and disseminated until
today
This is a comprehensive environmental education program.
Since 1995 it travels in nurseries and schools all over Greece
and provides knowledge about the bear and the reasons that
compromise its conservation. It guides children to a search
of a new set of values that will ensure the balance in the
natural environment and in the human life. Up to today the
Ârown Âear Kit has reached over 5000 classrooms and more than
100.000 students.
- On the trail of the brown bear
This material is addressed to children of ages eight to thirteen
and is focused in the prospects of survival of bear in the
southern Balkans, as well as in the demonstration of the value
of international collaboration, for the joint confrontation
of environmental problems.
- My Grammos, My Rodopi - Maps of my place
This is a comprehensive program of Environmental Education
that approaches the specific natural and cultural characteristics
of two mountainous regions. The main objectives of this program
are to help the schoolchildren -through communication and
collaboration with the adults of the region- to re-evaluate
and discover the diversity and importance of their surrounding
environment (human and natural) while utilizing imaginative
combinations which will give children the opportunity to imprint
the elements of their choice in a peculiar, original map.
Initially the program was addressed to children aged 11-15,
while it was later distributed in teams of adults that work
in the region.
NEW PROGRAM: The Cartographers in Verno
and Varnountas mountains.
The new environmental education program of ARCTUROS was
specifically planned for the region that includes the mountains
Verno and Varnounta and is addressed to schoolchildren of
11-15 years old. The program is interconnected with ARCTUROS'
efforts to inform children for mountainous regions with important
wildlife species of the area, as well as to highlight the
importance of their protection and of their prudent management.
The fundamental objective is to involve children to the in-depth
study of the history, the culture, the traditional customs,
the natural environment and the daily life of this place and
to assist them in manufacturing original maps of the area.
Examples of maps include a garden in the courtyard of school,
a map that is eaten or carton-houses made of clay and dough!
The program will be distributed free of charge in schools
all over Greece and teachers can receive it from ARCTUROS.
